What a lovely tribute to your father. He was very young when he had you. Must have been difficult to be at that age and have a responsibility like that.

I just returned from my weekly visit with my dad in his nursing home (about 40 miles south of us), and he is doing good. He's 87 and had me (also the first-born) when he was 28--they had trouble getting pregnant. After I came, four siblings came in quick succession.

My dad was insistent that all five of us graduate from college--he dropped out of school at age 17 to serve in WWII. I'm so grateful he made education his top priority for us. He also did something personal for me when I was a young teen. He was a three-pack a day smoker, and one day he took a white hankie and blew cigarette smoke through it. He showed the brown gunk on the cloth and told me that if I smoked that's what would end up on my lungs. I never smoked. And, my dad quit cold-turkey when he was 45 after our doctor told him that he'd be dead by age 50 if he didn't quit. I'm so glad he did.

Thanks for sharing from your love for your dad.
