He's 87 and had me (also the first-born) when he was 28--they had trouble getting pregnant. After I came, four siblings came in quick succession. My dad was insistent that all five of us graduate from college--he dropped out of school at age 17 to serve in WWII. I'm so grateful he made education his top priority for us. He also did something personal for me when I was a young teen. He was a three-pack a day smoker, and one day he took a white hankie and blew cigarette smoke through it. He showed the brown gunk on the cloth and told me that if I smoked that's what would end up on my lungs. I never smoked. And, my dad quit cold-turkey when he was 45 after our doctor told him that he'd be dead by age 50 if he didn't quit. I'm so glad he did.
