How A Dream Came True—The Back Story of Kalein

Eleven years ago the re:create Gathering of Creatives came into existence in Franklin, TN. It began with a dream of refreshing, encouraging and diffusing ideas among global creatives.

A short time later in that same year, two Nashville recording artists asked me to consider mentoring them. I realized immediately the artist mentoring entailed the same three goals as the re:create Gathering. As mentor I was to encourage, refresh, and diffuse ideas with these creatives.

These two opportunities became ongoing realities and a short year later I found myself journeying to the country of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. While changing flights at Heathrow in London, I was challenged by security that I possessed a fake boarding pass. They had never heard of the city Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, nor the country. After confirming that it was indeed a real place, I was allowed to travel on.

A few days later, after eighteen hours of flying and another eight harrowing hours driving in a dilapidated van to a remote village in the foothills of the mighty Tien Shen mountains, I found myself conversing on the muddy streets of Karakol, shivering in the snow, with a young man named Rafael. Through the interpreter he asked me, “Randy, what is your dream?” I told him and then in turn, asked him the same question.

The answer caused one of those pivotal moments, when your head spins and you realize life will never be the same again.

Rafael answered, “Oh, I want to be a rapper like Ja Rule.”

Imagine standing in a third world village with sewage running around our feet, only one old black and white television in the entire village, literally in the middle of nowhere on the other side of the world, and yet, a young man has been influenced by an American artist.

These three events shaped a vision called Kalein. The name Kalein (kah-leen) is derived from the Greek word kaleo which means calling and as with most greek words it has an underlying nuance of beauty. Thus the double entendre Beauty is Calling.

A place of encouragement. Every creative needs an inordinate amount of encouragement.

The magic in their lives has been churched out, spanked out, combed out and educated out. They’ve been beaten down and told to grow up, for God’s sake, by the ones who are ashamed of what they’ve allowed to wither within.

A place of refreshment. Every creative needs an inordinate amount of refreshment. Empathic creatives tend to give out emotionally to others and in their art, and deplete their emotional tanks.

Solitude, beauty, nature and the sacraments of food and drink offer refreshment for a dry and weary soul.

A place to diffuse ideas. The world needs the ideas of our creatives. For years, my life mantra has been “to influence influencers,” but a true understanding of the word diffuse compels us to identify and influence innovative influencers.

Ideas are spread most effectively by global people of the same tribe gathering together in a refreshing and encouraging environment and exchanging life experiences.

In the past eleven years, re:create has grown into a gathering of 150 global creatives and innovative influencers.

And as eleven years have passed, the weekly mentoring group of two recording artists has grown into a group of ten. I promised them I would always be at our meeting place on Tuesday morning, and only four weeks in eleven years have I sat at our meeting place alone.

I have come to realize that re:create, the mentoring group and Kalein are one and the same.

Kalein is simply an extension of the same three goals.

To refresh, encourage and diffuse ideas.

Kalein is:

• An experience of solitude.

• An experience of creativity.

• A experience of mentoring.

• An experience of sacred space.

• An experience where gifted artists and leaders are refreshed, encouraged and where the diffusion of ideas begins.

Kalein is such an experience. Imagine six young songwriters, cinematographers, singers, culinary artists, fashion designers, painters, writers, illusionists, comedians, poets, philosophers, or contemplatives from all over the globe gathered round a roaring bonfire with real world artists and leaders.

These artists and leaders serving as master teachers by regaling them with stories about their Grammy and Academy awards, war stories from the road, business and stage, practical experiences and the nuances of their craft. Imagine sitting at the feet of some of the greatest artists and leaders the world has ever known as they mentor and teach in an intimate and aesthetic setting.

Kalein is such an experience. Imagine a place where a leader or pastor who is burned out, tired, or walking through a moral crisis can come for grace filled one-on-one mentoring and friendship with a time-tested veteran of the pastorate or business world. Imagine a safe place of total confidentiality and complete solitude endowed with breath-taking beauty.

Kalein is such an experience. Imagine thought leaders and artists from around the world converging for salons to discuss art, leadership and faith. Imagine religious leaders from all faiths coming together to dialogue and collaborate.

Kalein is such an experience. Imagine cruising the Caribbean with like-minded creatives while being inspired by great speakers, beautiful scenery, and stimulating conversations around the pool.

Kalein is a place without walls that is conducive for these life-changing experiences.

Great to read this article Randy and to share the excitement and joy of your dream becoming reality!!

I was wondering if you knew of any creatives in Australia that might be interested in connecting in this type of community? Unfortunately for me you live just a little too far away :)

I’m really keen to seek out this kind of community in Australia, any help would be great!

We loved hosting you guys! We look forward to doing it again when the time allows. I got to watch the young men relax, and hear from God while they were here. Also we will make sure we have enough ammunition. I really think it is valueable for “older” people to take on and mentor younger or less experienced people. God has brought you through things so you can share the knowledge that has been gained through going into the “fire”. Also it is important to teach others how to hear the voice of God. Keep it up, and God bless

Hey Randy – this is an inspiring vision. For the last 10 years I’ve traveled to eastern europe for a couple of weeks to encourage and inspire creatives there.

More recently I’ve been through the getting scorched & beat up stage here. Think I’d like to experience Kalein sometime. Bless you man!

@Rob Still, Awesome, Rob. Awesome! I would love to welcome you at Kalein. Just let me know…

Randy, so glad you posted on this. I was browsing the Kalein site just the other day and was thinking how awesome it would be to experience this. Thanks for fostering such a massive vision and opening it up for us. Looking forward to partnering in some way!

    Ja-Rule is an artist???

    Just kidding! (Sort of)

But I digress. This is a great story Randy. I love reading about things like this. It’s interesting because on Saturday I am meeting with several people to explore ideas and help a good friend launch his dream of producing a television pilot. I am going to send this to him because I know it will provide him with inspiration.

      @Jay, Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome, Jay. I hope it helps give him inspiration!

      Thanks!

My husband is a musician and he has recently connected with a like-minded mentor. I’ve been amazed at the empowerment it has given him. Truly a must-have for a creative. Love your vision for community among this group.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Felicity, Yes, it is an amazing thing for an artist to be empowered by a mentor. I’m thankful your husband has found someone! Thanks, Felicity for joining the conversation.

This is such an incredible thing, Randy. I know many creative that over the years withered and died because they had nothing like this to help feed, encourage and drive them. If you ever need volunteers to help with an event, let me know. I don’t know how I could help but I know first hand how this could be a huge value to a creative who is struggling.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

      @Jason, Thanks SO much, Jason!

Randy, I am very excited about your mission and vision with Kalein! Not only do I want to sip from its Sabbath rhythm and walk in its mystery, I want to help you spread this ministry.

Let me know how and when I can support you and Kalein!

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Keith Jennings, Thanks SO much, Keith. I will certainly let you know how you can support with your writing and your creativity in the long term.

In the short term we need monthly donors (for as little as $25) to help scholarship needy creatives (especially third world creatives) to attend a Kalein experience and to build a lodge on the 124 pristine acres to house additional experiences-especially the One-on-Ones.

      Thanks so much!!

How I wish there was a group like this where I live. There are some creatives here, but none are willing to invest in others. I so identify with the part about a place of encouragement you wrote here. Just last night I mentioned to a friend how I wished we had a community of creatives like this. It does become very lonely at times when most you come in contact with don’t understand you.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Amy Nabors, The great thing about Kalein is that it has no walls. We have experiences in the Caribbean, Colorado, Tennessee and Montana. Other locations will soon be added. Stay tuned.

Thanks, Amy, for joining the conversation.
