“Centuries of secularism have failed to transform eating into something strictly utilitarian. Food is still treated with reverence…To eat is still something more than to maintain bodily functions. People may not understand what that ‘something more’ is, but they nonetheless desire to celebrate it. They are still hungry and thirsty for sacramental life.”Alexander Schmemann (For the Life of the World: Sacraments and Orthodoxy)

Smoking Loon (I miss their old label, the “hunting painting” of a duck in the high reeds enjoying a cigar) haven’t tried their Viognier. I’ll grab some today. (I was sipping Brazin’ Zin last night. but will be making mulled wine tonight ..if W&S hasn’t run out of spices.) Happy Christmas, to all at the Elrod compound.

We usually have the honey-backed ham, but this year we are having turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green leafy salad, a vegie of some kind and then for dessert: our traditional buttermilk pie. No wine – still have underage kids at home. Enjoy your Christmas feasting. Sounds delicious.

This Christmas eve will be New York Strips, twice baked potaoes with smoked gouda, peppered bacon and carmelized onions within the recipe, spinach salad, and one very special piece of chocolate cheesecke sent by Les via Cheesecake Factory to be shared while he’s in Afghanistan eating the same to enjoy Christmas eve together.
