5 Things I Think Will Happen On The LOST Finale

For six years, my family and I have been totally addicted to this brilliantly convoluted masterpiece of television entertainment. So it’s with a bittersweet pen, I write this final goodbye to old friends.

A few random thoughts:

– LOST has been with us longer than YouTube.

– Good storytelling never grows old.

– Great stories have layers.

– I relate to Jack and I’ve fallen head over heels in love with Kate.

– Eerily, I also relate to Locke and I fell in love with Juliette too.

– I searched everywhere until I found the exact edition of Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov Ben was reading in the hatch prison cell when Locke confronted him.

– I repeatedly have been able to utter full sentences seconds before the characters say them.

I could go on. And on. And on. But instead – to the matter at hand – my five guesses about the finale.

Guess # 1. I think all the characters left alive will return to the real world realizing life leads to freedom from the fear of death, which in turn is the freedom to live. They will have a new understanding of what it means to live in the moment, neither anticipating the future nor regretting the past.

Guess # 2. Except for Locke/Smoke Monster.

Guess # 3. I think Jack, Sawyer and Hurley will finally realize the hero that resides within them.

Guess # 4. I think Jin & Sun should be rescued from the submarine and bathed in the Temple pool that saved Sayid.

Guess # 5. I think Kate will – ohhh darn – I don’t know what to think about Kate. I have never understood women in the real world, so I dare not predict what a television woman will do.

Pray tell, what do YOU think will happen?

Read The Tennessean (Nashville’s Newspaper) and Dave Paulson’s excellent article released this morning featuring more of my comments and theories.

Just read the USA Today LOST article today recapping last night’s finale. I think it is dead on! There are so many variables to consider when deciding what the show was all about beyond what the producers have been telling us (Randy, hopefully you watched the 2 hour precursor show).

Could the entire thing be just Jack’s dream as he floated in and out of it after the crash?

Looking forward to your thoughtful blog today…..

I think LOST will go down in the great Abyss of syndication, Blue Ray and DVD releases. We can all sit back and take a second look to see what we all did not see the first time. I think your next on your list is lacher a class at O Moore College what you learned from LOST

I have no idea what will happen on the show, but I DO know that I can’t watch it until tomorrow… and it will be a pixilated bootleg internet version – my only option in Italy. So I won’t be reading your blog/twitters until after! But, I live in Italy – so how can I complain?!

    Miss you guys!

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Iz Holidae, Ah, Iz. There are a few things, very few, mind you, that are better than LOST. Italy is certainly one of those things. Enjoy!!!

After SIX years of watching this show I am PUMPED and saddened. I cannot wait to see what happens and I really hope that they “Leave” the island and finally find the freedom they can only dream about and what we have as we follow Christ daily :) :) :)

@Renee Johnson, In some ways, it’s hard to believe it’s been six years.

Today is bittersweet for me. One of looking back over the last 6 years of watching one of the most amazing television shows of my time come to an end. I’m not ready to let that beautiful island and those amazing group of actors go!! But, I am so looking forward to hopefully understanding more of this awesome story that has truly kept me “LOST” from day one. I have a feeling that I’ll still be confused at the end of this ride but the journey has been wonderful. I will miss escaping to this beautiful island every season and wondering when the new season is starting and never understanding why the network shows us a few episodes, stops for a couple months, a few more episodes and then the dreaded season finale. It’s no wonder we’ve all been so confused….. I haven’t a clue as to how the story will unfold before us tonight, what I do know is that I’ll sit in front of my TV with my dog beside me, talk to the TV, probably shed some tears, hopefully have some revelations and just be blissfully “LOST”!!

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Lisa Rogers, ah yes, Lisa. A temporary escape from the real world. That’s bliss, isn’t it? I certainly think so!

I want Ben to live, Jack and Kate to be together, Sawyer to be the hero, Charlie to come back as wellas Mr Echo! I hated how quick they killed off Mr Echo. His character as great! I started watching lost because of Merry, I mean Dominique Monahan, Charlie. I was hooked at the first show and haven’t missed one since. (#Teamsawyer) now for Lost rehab, Im watching Glee, light hearted song and dance.

@Carole Turner, My girls keep raving about Glee. Oooh. I like your “wants”. Mr. Ekko was awesome!!

Thelma, I agree. There may never another Lost.

Polar bear was a Darma initiative gone wrong…. And I too found it cool to know that the producers would monitor fan reactions after each show and made some changes to the script accordingly….

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@The Billebob, Yes, true use of dialogue, not just a monologue. Amazing.

  9. Thelma Bowlen Avatar

I just want someone to explain to me where the polar bears came from and what they were doing on the island!

My favorite — and most personally hair-raising episode — was the one where Hurley and Libby meet in the asylum in Season 2? 3? I remember reading that the idea for that episode was actually harvested from a fan forum.

Did you get to catch the four different trailers that fans could vote for on abc.com to choose the one that would air? Brilliant ideas in them. Not sure which one won!

I honestly don’t think we’ll see anything like Lost in a very long time.
    .-= Thelma Bowlen´s last blog ..Last weekend, last year. . . =-.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Thelma Bowlen, I agree that it will be tough to top. Weren’t the Polar Bears created to distinguish the evil and unique history of the island. The Dharma experiments and all that?

  10. Ani Avatar

LOST huh? They broadcast it here too. I did watch but couldn’t watch it till the end of just one episode. Just not my kind of TV. I’m surprised you aren’t Lost yet. Just kidding. I’m not that much a fan of TV series. Sooo, it’s ending? You really think they don’t have follow-up? Well, I hope you enjoy it even it’s the final. I really don’t know why I reply.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Ani, Thanks, Ani. I’m glad you reply!! I really do think it is the finale with no follow-up. Really.

  11. Carol Asher Avatar

I spent weeks watching all the previous seasons just so I could enjoy the last one with everyone. I was crazy addicted. I would stay up late at night because I could not figure what would happen next. I personally think if the writer(s) had not idea where this was going after the second season makes it more brilliant. This meant creativity could flow from season to season. I adore Jin & Sun. Hurley is this unsung lovely hearted hero. Personally I think we will find this is a feud of brothers.

My question is will there ever be another show that pulls us in like this one?
.-= Carol Asher´s last blog ..Did I just think that? =-.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Carol Asher, Yes, I agree about the writers brilliance. They just added mystery layer upon layer, thus leading us deeper into the rabbit hole.

      1. Carol Anne Avatar
        Carol Anne

@Randy Elrod, really?!? Do you all smoke weed or something? It doesn’t make you brilliant to churn out “layers” of junk. My daughter wrote a “book” about her stuffed animal when she was five. I wouldn’t turn it into a tv show that had people confused about what they had just watched or question what the whole thing meant. Too much credit given to individuals who were grasping to keep their jobs in LaLa land. Randy, I appreciate your writing, and frankly think you show more promise as a compelling writer.

        1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Carol Anne, I promise I don’t smoke weed, just “black smoke”. Ha! Just kidding. Thanks for joining the conversation.

@Randy Elrod, Yes. Brillant despite what others say that just don’t get it. Ironically, typical “fanatical” Lost fans have similar characteristics: high IQs, driven, creative, visionaries and typically very successful in the business world. I have had the wonderful opportunity of talking to people all over the country about Lost and these characteristics hold true. Some love it, some think it is stupid. And again, the characteristics hold true…..just saying.

        1. Carol Anne Avatar
          Carol Anne

@The Billebob, Hey Billiebob! High IQs? I haven’t spoken to a fan yet who can explain in a nutshell what the show is really about. They try to dismiss (which I guess speaks to their “creativity”) and continue to gush. Many people like to display their intelligence when describing a piece of art and can articulate the object’s meaning to them. No matter how diverse the opinions, you may learn something from each and every one. The same cannot be said of Lost fans. Please illuminate us with your intelligent recap of Lost!

I’ve given up trying to figure that show out! All I know is, I’m so sad it’s coming to an end. As a writer, I find myself continually in awe of the writers and Carlton Cuse & Damon Lindelof.

I do love your thoughts about Jin & Sun. I SO hope that’s true!

There are a couple of things we know for sure and one of them is that we are going to be hanging on a whole bunch of things we want answers to. Abrams already said that many will be disappointed because the answers won’t be forthcoming (See Wired magazine article in April).

I think Mr. Elrod is on to a few of these things. However, I don’t think anyone will get off the island. Smokie will succeed in blowing up the island and when that happens, the next scene will go back to LA where all of the characters are together in one place (remember that Jack is noticing already how all these people were on the same flight – no coincidence here).

In the end, this has all been nothing but someone’s dream! I just won’t tell you whose…….

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@The Billebob, Ah, Billiebob. You intrigue me so…I’m going to pull out my April version of Wired this very moment…

      1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Randy Elrod, Okay. Just read the entire WIRED scenarios, trivia, easter eggs and more. Great stuff. I may be more correct than I thought. Hmmm.

Rocco, don’t get your hopes up, I love me some J.J. and I’m addicted to lost as well, but Mr. Abrams philosophy and key to success, is to be long on mystery and short on answers.

I’m sure you are already familiar with these guys, but if not, you gotta check out the recap-rock band, “Previously on Lost”. Here’s one of my fav’s!!! “The
Ballad of Sayid Jarrah” HILLARIOUS! http://ow.ly/1O7MA

@Anthony Skinner, No, I had not seen those. Hilarious!! Thanks. I love dialogue!!!

  17. Rocco Avatar

We don’t have cable (not for 14+ years), we ended up getting addicted to the show in the 3rd season when my wife brought home the first season on dvd from the library. I think we watched the whole first two seasons in two days! Watching the rest online the day after they air.

It has been quite a ride and I too have enjoyed it. Although they have killed off most of my favorite charters (Mr. Eco, Locke, Charlie, Juliette, [and apparently Richard]) I am now rooting for Jack to the finish!

You know, as long as Good triumphs over Evil, I’ll be satisfied. If the end leaves you hanging, I will be pissed off since I invested six years of my life into this!!

@Rocco, Here. Here. Please, God, let the ending be good!!!

      1. Carol Anne Avatar
        Carol Anne

@Randy Elrod, Goodness, why wouldn’t the ending be good? Is it because your faith was put into a weirdly made program that the creator admitted to not really knowing what he planned to do after the first two seasons? Talk about misguided. Don’t be pissed off if the ending isn’t what you want. It will be exactly what the viewers deserve for keeping this creepy show on the air past the second season. You wanted this form of entertainment and you got it. Sorry, not a fan!

        1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Carol Anne, Oh my goodness. I think you’ve been hanging around Locke. No, maybe it was Sawyer.
