The Ten Commandments of Twitter with Apologies To @Moses

I. DO have fun and be yourself (See @sheilawalsh @lesclairmont and @m_vince ). Twitter is a great forum for natural comedians.

II. DON’T preach. Twitter is not the place for bully pulpits and sanctimonious platitudes. (See @pharisee @saducee and @insertfavreligiousleader)

III. DO follow authors, musicians, artists, newspapers, magazines, leaders and heroes you’d like to be friends with. (You might just get a tweet back from one of them).

IV. DON’T gripe about everything. Nobody likes a surly and negative Twit.

V. DO be kind. Don’t say anything you wouldn’t say to someone’s face—or for the record. Oh yeah, Twitter is on the record. Forever.

VI. DON’T unfollow all your followers just so you can pretend to be cool. (Unless you are @charliesheen).

VII. DO retweet good resources. Tweets love great Groupon deals, technology hints and deals, great articles, books and the best new apps.

VIII. DON’T exceed the tolerable one-tweet-an-hour-limit just to boost your Klout score.

IX. DO explore the creative utilization of hashtags. #morethanonceacreativehashtaghasbroughtmeamuchneededsmile

X. DO tweet photos. Food, wine, exotic locations and sunsets are personal favorites. Download Instagram and unleash your inner creative.

DO interract with your followers – create community!

DON’T auto-dm new followers. (That nearly always results in an unfollow from me).

Keep your feed as organic as possible. People that fill their feed with auto-tweets or promote things too much get muted.

DON’T be scared to follow private tweeters. There’s usually a legitimate reason for their private profile. (ie – I had a nasty situation where people (not on twitter!) were misusing my tweets…)

If you have thousands of followers and are not famous, you are probably an amazing blogger OR using a false manner of getting followers (ie: site that tells you who will follow back). Do you really want that many readers who care nothing about you, really? Just be yourself and let your followers come organically (or from a blog giveaway you are hosting. :)

and also, I normally follow back unless I have no interest in the subject and that usually clues me in that they are following from a “who will follow back” list. I have learned not to follow those. Also, there is a site out there that lets you know who you follow that is following back. I check that periodically and unfollow anyone who has unfollowed me. So there! :0

sure thing. I was thinking later that you might have mistaken the “So there!” to be directed at you because of the way I wrote it. It was not, I promise.

You happened to hit on a subject that I have thought about! Enjoyed your post!
