Tim Sanders was the Chief Solutions Officer at Yahoo! and later their Leadership Coach. Prior to these senior positions Tim created and led the Yahoo! ValueLab, an in-house “think tank” which delivered futuristic insight on technology and human behavior.
He was also an early member of Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner’s broadcast.com, the most successful opening day IPO in history.
I first was introduced to him when I read his book, Love Is A Killer App. His newest book, Today We Are Rich, is available today.

Love Is A Killer App is one of my all-time favorite books, so I was extremely interested in this “prequel,” as Tim calls it. Monday, I had the opportunity to interview Tim via Skype. In the interview, I asked Tim seven questions.
1. The endearing fabric of the book is your interweaving throughout the book the wisdom of your Grandmother Billye. You say, “Billye knew from experience the crucial link between confidence and achievement.” Can you talk about that link?
2. In the book you list 7 Principles of Total Confidence that I found mesmerizing! The first principle is “Feed Your Mind Good Stuff” and you say that TV News inhibits positive thinking. Could you talk about that?
3. The second principle is “Move The Conversation Forward” and you say, “Be a builder of ideas, not a destroyer of dreams.” And then you have some very pointed words about those who would play the devil’s advocate. Can you elaborate?
4. Principle 3 is “Exercise Your Gratitude Muscle” and you suggest recruiting a “workout” partner to practice the exercise of helping each other notice what each of you should appreciate. How should we go about that?
5. In Principle 4 “Giving To Be Rich” you talk about Tommie King and giving to empower others. Tommie lost his cash reserves thru a bank fiasco, but in the process realized the value of giving the invisible. Wisdom, connections and reputation. How can we give to empower others?
6. Principle 5 is “Prepare Yourself” and you provide a wealth of knowledge in this chapter. Why do you talk about reading deeply as opposed to merely grazing?
7. Last, you touch on something dear to my heart, something you call mentorizing. You quote a mentor of yours Mr. Stanley Marcus (Former CEO, Neiman Marcus), who told you, “You’ll never get dumber by making someone else smarter.” What is the importance of mentorizing?
I loved the book. It helped me understand why brands like Yahoo!, Dell, and Neiman Marcus are such great companies. More importantly, it helped me see how I can better lead, create and influence.
