How The Enneagram Can Improve Relationships With Ourselves And Others

Throughout the years, I’ve found personality assessments to be extremely helpful. I have utilized the DISC, Meyers-Briggs, Love Languages and Maximizing Your Strengths assessments in hiring new teammates and building team camaraderie.

But for some reason there was a hesitancy on my part to take the Enneagram assessment. The graphic seemed hokey, the verbiage inaccessible, and it all sounded too religious and new age.

This past weekend while vacationing with friends Michael and Gail Hyatt, I noticed Richard Rohr’s book The Enneagram: A Christian Perspective and began to casually read. My intuitive self immediately realized there was more here than I cared to admit.

When Gail told me there is an app (of course there is) for the assessment, I promptly purchased it (.99 cents) and began answering the questions. My results are in the graphic accompanying this post.

I am a seven. A seven on the Enneagram is described as a Busy, Variety-seeking type: Spontaneous, Versatile, Acquisitive, and Scattered. Sevens are enthusiastic and almost everything captures their attention. They approach life with curiosity, optimism and a sense of adventure, like “kids in a candy store” who look at the world in wide-eyed, rapt anticipation of all the good things they are about to experience.

Of course, there is the flip side to all this enthusiam, which I will save for another day—being the enthusiast I am!

I will say that I’m very impressed with the candid evaluation and discussion of the dark side of personalities the Enneagram provides in order to improve our relationships and understanding of others. To me, this was the most powerful portion of the assessment.

No one is a pure personality type: everyone is a unique mixture of his or her basic type and usually one of the two types adjacent to it on the circumference of the Enneagram. One of the two types adjacent to your basic type is called your wing.

Your basic type dominates your overall personality, while the wing complements it and adds important, sometimes contradictory, elements to your total personality. I found that I have an eight wing as you can easily see on the photo of my results. The eight wing adds a Powerful, Dominating, Self-Confident, Decisive, Willful, and Confrontational aspect to my personality.

Examples of sevens include: John F. Kennedy, Leonard Bernstein, Amadeus Mozart, Kate Winslet, Elizabeth Taylor, Steven Spielberg, Bette Midler, Elton John and Joan Collins.

As my wife Chris (a two), Gail (a nine), and Mike (a three), discussed our Enneagram numbers, it was easy to see how helpful—and accurate—this assessment can be in improving our understanding and relationships with ourselves and those around us with whom we work, play and live.

You can go HERE to buy the app at the iTunes store.

After you take the assessment, please return here and tell us the results.

What is your Enneagram number?

What do you think about personality assessments such as the Enneagram?

Swiftly – I can express, impressed with your site. I had no trouble navigating through all the tabs then answers had been dreadfully fairly simple to access. I discovered , what I sought soon in any respect. Much spectacular. Would most likely appreciate it for those who add user discussion forums or something like that, it could be a best way for your shoppers to work together. Superb role..

I’m glad you recommended this. It was interesting, and just taking it provoked some good thoughts in my own mind. My results are here: http://twitpic.com/38y91y . I’m almost evenly a 4 and a 9. The only wing that comes up is 3–the other three possible wings (for the almost even 4 and 9) are way down at the bottom. Individualist + Peacemaker, with a little Achiever thrown in. That is, if I understand the wing idea right–are you just supposed to look at the number on either side of the main type you scored?

I’m a 7 w/ an 8 wing! And have always wanted to drip in in you guys one night in Franklin when I am passing through…I figured a few if you were probably 7’s like me and would be up for an adventure.

I’ve done another test similar to this one. I’m a loyalist and a helper. Those were my top. At work they made me do a test to make me see what they saw, there came out I’m also a challenger. I guess you develop qualities you are not aware of.

    Hi Randy,

First time visitor to your blog here (I found you from Michael Hyatt’s RT), and I feel a bit deceived.

Out of your whole entry titled “How The Enneagram Can Improve Relationships With Ourselves And Others” I got none of the “how” out of it. I’m familiar with the Enneagram framework, and don’t need that described; but was willing to read your intro and spiel about the app. I was then surprised by the abrupt end of your post.

I’m reading and posting from my phone, so forgive me if I missed something, but is this part it? ” it was easy to see how helpful—and accurate—this assessment can be in improving our understanding and relationships with ourselves and those around us with whom we work, play and live.”

I usually don’t need things spelled out for me, but I like to read productivity and self-help blogs to gain new insight with some details on life application. “Its easy” — which basically sounds like “it’s obvious” — is not what I expected when coming to read a post on “How…”

@Jonathan, Obviously, Jonathan, this blog cannot begin to supply the need you have. Deceived. By a blog. Think about it. Wow!

I would take it you are not a seven.

        @Randy Elrod, Hi Randy,

If I came off as sarcastic and critical, I apologize, but I am surprised by your defensive and biting reply.

I just wanted to give you the feedback that your title dies not reflect the actual post. For example, if one sees an Lifehacker post on “How to make a budget with Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software” for example, the body of the post should be more than a story of how the author found out about Excel, and an overview of what spreadsheets are.

Thank you for the personal reply.

@Brody, Nice, Brody. Even your comment seems consistent with that! Love it.

I’m a 1 (100%) Reformer – then 8 (84%) Challenger, and then 6 (80%) Loyalist. Very similar to my Strengths Finder – Deliberative, Responsibility, Consistency. Guess it’s pretty accurate, but I can’t help but feel that it (by it I mean ME) seems very boring, predictable and cold.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Cindy Graves, Cindy, we seven’s need your reform and your consistency or we would be up the proverbial creek without a paddle. And that is the gospel truth.

I never put a team together unless I have several persons gifted like you to keep me from crashing and burning.

      Thanks!!

Wow, Randy, have you researched this? It struck me, at first mention, as having to do with EST or Scientology, but the first few Google hits pointed to a boat-load of weirdness. It’s good to know about ourselves, but it’s good to know who it is that’s telling us, too, eh? From “Skeptic’s Dictionary” http://www.skepdic.com/enneagr.html to CRI Journal http://www.iclnet.org/pub/resources/text/cri/cri-jrnl/web/crj0146a.html there’s some “interesting” stuff about this thing.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Robert, Robert, I appreciate your concern. And I say thanks sincerely.

I greatly respect Father Richard Rohr. I feel he has given a solid Christian perspective for what seems to be no more than just another personality profile.

I realize it is tough to put all the people in the world into “boxes,” but I also respect research into personality types and how we can get along better knowing ourselves.

My mantra has always been “Utilize any tool possible for the kingdom.”

  9. Deb Barnett Avatar

    I’m a 7 with a 1 as a wing. Fun-loving and spontaneous but I’m gonna want to do it perfectly. That’s scarily accurate. :)

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Deb Barnett, Another seven! Wow! Do I hear seven sevens? Thanks, Deb.

      1. Deb Barnett Avatar

@Randy Elrod, actually – the 7 and 1 were from an online short test, not the app. So I just took it again on the app and I’m a 7 – The Enthusiast with a wing of a 2 – The Helper. I like that better – I’d rather be a people-pleaser than a perfectionist. Of course, if that’s okay with you…

        :o)

        1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Deb Barnett, Ah, yes. Better than me, with the six wing, The Challenger. So, my question is “Are you sure???” Ha!

  12. Angela Avatar

    It’s about time! :)

I have links to more literature and resources on my website, if your interested. I’m a seven too but hanging gone to the “dark side” of my number I can say that I’m now appreciative of the times I feel more like a five, which is what an integrated seven looks like.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Angela, Ah, we need to have coffee…soon.

So we have four sevens…do I hear five…sevens?

  13. Lindsey Nobles Avatar

      1. Lindsey Nobles Avatar

        Took the short one. I am 100% a 6 and 88% a 2. My 7 was high too…

        1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Lindsey Nobles, A six. Hmmmmm. Methinks I need to go back and read about you!! Thanks for returning and giving us the results!

          1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Randy Elrod, Whoa!! Lindsey, you and Chris Elrod are almost identical!! Wow!! She is 100% two and 88% six. Do you know your wing? Chris’ dominant wing is a three.

            1. Lindsey Nobles Avatar

              My wing is a 7. I knew I liked Chris. :)

              1. Randy Elrod Avatar

    I’m also a 7..I like to think of myself as a “10”, but 7 is above average…(Wait, wrong subject–lol)

Seriously, I’m a 7 too, with 2 being close behind…Was on a phone call this morning and someone told me they love my “open mindedness”…I took it as a compliment…Open mind, Open heart with a firm foundation of values..Hope that’s what I’m perceived as..

    Interesting Post, as always…

@Julie Kolb, Three sevens. Do I hear four…sevens??

@Julie Kolb, Yes. Very intriguing. I highly recommend Richard Rohr’s book for a detailed discussion of each type, wings and more.
