Percolators, Pressure Cookers & Problem Solving

What is your modus operandi for problem solving?

Are you like a percolator or a pressure cooker?

The most intriguing aspect of a personality assessment (DISC) I utilized in the past with our teams was the distinction of personalities when operating under stress. The assessment calls such tendencies “adapted” behavior.

Some people exhibit no difference at all under stress, while others show marked behavioral abnormalities.

I tend to be a percolator, while most of my supervisors were pressure cookers.

I am the kind of guy that wants to “sleep on a problem” and think it through and then…”get ‘er done.”

But the pressure cooker leader is accustomed to instantaneously making a decision and letting the chips fall as they may. Most of these successful types intuitively make the right decisions and trust their “gut.”

My favorite quote for pressure cooker problem solvers is, “Don’t let your lack of preparation cause a crisis on my part.” But they would quote right back at me and say, “Don’t waste time thinking. Just do something. Anything.”

Question: Do you most effectively solve problems like a percolator or a pressure cooker?

I have to honestly say, at times, I perform, respond, decide pressure cooker or perculator based on my audience. I only do this when, I truly feel it won’t make a big difference in the outcome. Such decision making indeed bleeds dry the idea of “authentic self” but, the flexibility has allowed me to experience a deeper level of understanding of both. By nature, I’m a perculator, but I can pull the trigger so to speak, if I see it’s necessary.

I’m absolutely a pressure cooker. Weird though. I’m a “high I” on the DISC, so you’d think I would percolate a lot more.

    I totally agree! Thanks, Keith!

I’m a percolator. But I like the creativity that a team of percolators AND pressure cookers generate when working together. That tension stirs interesting results!
