Famous Last Words

Beecher, Henry Ward (1813-1887) “Now comes the mystery.”

Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827) “Friends applaud, the comedy is over.”

Bogart, Humphrey (1899-1957) “I should never have switched from Scotch to Martinis.” (Unverified — attributed.)

Browning, Elizabeth Barrett (1806-1861) “Beautiful.” (When asked by her husband how she felt.)

Crosby, Bing (1903-1977) “That was a great game of golf, fellers.”

Eastman, George (1854-1932) “My work is done, why wait?” (His suicide note.)

Kelly, Ned (1854-1880) [Australian folk hero and outlaw and legend]. “I suppose it had to come to this. Such is life.” (As the hangman adjusted the hood to cover his face.)

Keynes, John Maynard (1883-1946) “I wish I’d drunk more champagne.”

Kennedy, John Fitzgerald (1917-1963) “If someone is going to kill me, they will kill me.” (On arriving in Dallas, 1963)

Jesus Christ (4 BC- 33AD) “It is finished.”

Marx, Karl (1818-1883) “Go on, get out. Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough.”

In response to Marx and since most of us are still saying things today—and hopefully we haven’t said enough…yet,

I could go a couple different ways, accordingly my final mood…

“Xavier & Elijah, look after your mother, & become the men that I never became”

    OR

“Boys, go make a ton of money from my music. It’s always worth more when people are dead”

Ten points for this reply. I’d never thought of either, “Hold my beer,” OR “How hard can it be?” Randy, you have the best readers! LOL

I have fought the good fight…I have finished the race.

    You forgot “Let’s Roll.” — :)

Tony’s is funny – my boys LOVE those movies.

Most last words in Oklahoma usually begin with “Hold my beer.”

My husband swears that mine will probably be “how hard can it be?”

My grandmother’s last words were to my Aunt Carolyn. She whispered, “Carolyn, I also wanted you to know…” She faded off and died in her sleep that night. Can you imagine that?!

“After all, tomorrow is another day.” the last words uttered from the epic film, Gone With The Wind. Most people remember Rhett Butler’s last words…”Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn”, but Scarlett actually go the last word in.

And I have no idea what my last words would be… probably something cheesy at this moment, but hopefully a little more profound when that time comes. :)

I’m not sure what I would want my last words to be…But I know what I want them to say at my funeral:
    “Hey look- he’s alive!”

I’d like mine to be something like my aunt’s. She started shouting “Glory Hallelujah, How Beautiful” on her deathbed. (She was Baptist, not a Pentecostal shouter). Her daughter tried to calm her and asked what she was so happy about. Aunt Lorena said “it’s so so beautiful, what a beautiful rainbow.” Her daughter said she didn’t see one. Aunt Lorena told her, “it’s not for you, it’s my rainbow.” We know she was nearing the glorious throne of God!

    1. Randy Avatar

@Jan, That is also beautiful!! Thanks, Jan!!

Hm. I have to comment because today marks the 20th anniversary of the last conversation I had with my dad before his passing. His last words to me were, “I love you. I am so proud of you.” So, with that, I would want mine to be, “Be love.”

    Thanks,Randy!
