How To Measure Your Combined Twitter & Facebook Online Influence

The Klout Score is the measurement of your overall online influence. The scores range from 1 to 100 with higher scores representing a wider and stronger sphere of influence. Klout uses over 35 variables on Facebook and Twitter to measure True Reach, Amplification Probability, and Network Score.

Klout believes that influence is the ability to drive people to action — “action” might be defined as a reply, a retweet, a comment, or a click.

Klout performs significant testing to ensure that the average click-through rate on links shared is highly correlated with a person’s Klout Score. The 25+ variables used to generate scores for each of these categories are normalized across the whole data set and run through our analytics engine.

After the first pass of analytics, they apply a specific weight to each data point. They then run the factors through our machine-learning analysis and calculate the final Klout Score. The final Klout Score is a representation of how successful a person is at engaging their audience and how big of an impact their messages have on people.

I have included my Klout metrics for your perusal even though some are inaccurate. I just became a member two days ago, so many of my metrics are still updating. But I believe this is an invaluable tool (and the best I have found so far) for measuring your combined Twitter & Facebook online Influence, your effectivness as a social networker as well as for advertisers wishing to determine effective social influencers.

What is your Klout Score? (Go check and come back and tell us!)

What have you learned from this?

Hey Randy, this is really cool to read through.

    My Klout score is a 42 and I’m an explorer {true reach 458} {Amplification 21} {Network 48}

I’m not really sure what all this means yet, but I’m digging in directly after I finish typing this message.

Thanks once again my friend for being “you”

  3. Chuck Harris Avatar

Mine is a 49 today and i’m a specialist. I was a 55 yesterday. seems to be a fluctuating idea depending on how much you tweet, FB and respond. i’ll take it.

  4. Meredith Dunn Avatar

Fascinating! I only scored a 39 (onward and upward!), but I am a feeder. Is it weird that I found this really encouraging? I’ve never known whether or not what I tweet is seen and appreciated, but if this is accurate at all, I’m headed in the right direction!

  5. Christy Avatar

My score was a 45…which surprised me ;) I connected it with facebook and will be interested to see what it says when that info comes in.

It said I was a specialist too and very consistent in my focus with a highly engaged audience…which I find absolutely true seeing as I often have @ convos ;)

Thanks for the tool Randy….it was fascinating!

    (enjoy your snow day!)

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Christy, Thanks, Christy! Yes, the Facebook info should prove interesting.

  6. Grant Jenkins Avatar

Great post, Randy. I’m definitely a geek when it comes to this kind of data. I’ve been using Klout for awhile now and still find myself combing through all the various stats every so often to figure out what they really mean. The most interesting thing about it all to me is, much like blog stats, knowing who is listening.

My Klout score is 68, and it lists me as a “specialist”.

Interestingly enough, Raak posted an article a couple weeks ago called “Klout Is Broken”. The piece and study itself are intriguing, but the best part was the reply from Klout co-founder and CEO Joe Hernandez. Impressive would be an understatement. As big as I know you are on social media reputation management, I think you would really enjoy checking that out.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Grant Jenkins, Thanks, Grant. Very intriguing. i can’t wait to read the article. I’m definitely finding inconsistencies in the Klout score, but helpful nonetheless.

  7. Tony Alicea Avatar

My score is 51, specialist. That’s pretty cool.

94 true reach, 30 amplification, 54 network. I’ll have to do a little more research to figure out what all that means.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Tony Alicea, That is great, Tony. Yes, I am still learning all the ramifications myself. Very interesting!

  8. Daniel Decker Avatar

    Excellent resource. Thanks!

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Daniel Decker, I’m glad it is valuable, Daniel.

  9. Ashley Pichea Avatar

I signed up with Klout last week, and I was excited to find out I have a Klout score of 58. My goal is to evaluate my use of both Twitter and Facebook to increase my Klout by at least 10 within the next three months!

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Ashley Pichea, Great score!! Speaking of increasing our Klout, do we follow each other on Twitter?

      Thanks, Ashley!

      1. Ashley Pichea Avatar

@Randy Elrod, Thanks! I’ll be sure to follow you on Twitter…

  11. Michael Avatar

My score is 50. It says I’m a specialist.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Michael, Great score, Michael. Does it accurately describe the topic in which you specialize?

      1. Michael Avatar

@Randy Elrod, I think it does. I pretty much blog on every day life and how God moves in it. The only real deviation from that is when I talk about creativity. So, yes…I think it was pretty accurate.

        1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Michael, Great, it wasn’t so accurate with my wife’s focus, so I’m wondering how accurate it is. Thanks!

I’m at a 42..Not surprised at all..I think that is what I set out for Twitter to be ~ to explore and to listen…However, the more I explore, the more I wish to participate, and the less “guarded” I am…Twitter has actually been a growing process for myself and my own insecurities…Twitter gives me a voice and I’m learning that I may have some really good ideas and thoughts to share, also…”Evolving”

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Julie Kolb, Awesome, Exploring and evolving are two very good words!! Congrats!

    2. Ashley Pichea Avatar

@Julie Kolb, I love your self-analysis of your score! I’m still trying to figure out how to move from a “specialist” to an “influencer”. I want to be able to not only be a resource but to influence others.

@Ashley Pichea, Thanks Ashley…Like Popeye (I think he was mentioned above in an earlier comment)..”I yam what I yam”…As for you, specialist is a pretty awesome score, too.

  13. Chris Avatar

“My Klout score is a 39. I’m a Specialist: Klout says, “You may not be a celebrity, but within your area of expertise your opinion is second to none. Your content is likely focused around a specific topic or industry with a focused, highly-engaged audience.”

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Chris, Congrats. Your score will go up once Facebook is factored into the equation. You are a Facebook rockstar!

  14. Justin Brackett Avatar

    Randy,

Thanks for the reminder of this tool! I love how much they have continued to tool it and make it better! Great example to us all to keep working our product and calling, making it as good as we know it can be!

    Justin Brackett

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Justin Brackett, Thanks, Justin. Yes, it has really come a long way!

  15. Lindsey Nobles Avatar

    64, I’m a specialist. Whatever that means…

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Lindsey Nobles, Whatever it means…is very, very good. I am amazed at how similar you and Chris are.

  16. marina Avatar

I’m surprised to be a “31” – I’m an Explorer. I need to explore less and focus on consistently engaging my audience. Thanks for sharing this tool. I can’t wait to re-assess in a couple of months.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@marina, Awesome, Marina. I love how it guides you to focus!

  17. James L castellano Avatar

I have a long way to go, only a 10. I need to engage more with influencers to increase my score. The positive says I have a strong true reach and the ability to generate actions and discussions.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@James L castellano, Awesome, James. This is indeed a helpful tool. Gives you ideas for improvement.

  18. Michael Hyatt Avatar

My Klout Score is 72. I am a networker.

Thanks for pointing out this great analytics tool. I had forgotten about it!

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Michael Hyatt, Thanks, Michael. You are truly a networker!! I’m so proud of your score!

  19. mandythompson Avatar

My sad little klout score is 44. I’m an “explorer” so I think improvement could come if I narrowed my focus a bit.

Question: (surprise surprise) where’d the big jump come from in your graphs? Looks like your klouting downed a can of spinach and went all popeye on us.

    1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@mandythompson, I’m not sure. I think it was when I decided to blod again regularly. I’m still trying to figure out the ramifications and some of the inconsistencies.

      Keep exploring!! And focusing!!

      1. Randy Elrod Avatar

@Randy Elrod, By the way, 44 is NOT sad. A very good score.
